Hall effect sensors, or DC current sensors, are capable of measuring both AC and DC current. Hall effect sensors consist of a core, a Hall effect device, and signal conditioning circuitry. They operate based on the Hall Effect. The Hall Effect is a phenomenon discovered by Edwin Hall in 1879.
How does a DC current sensor work?
The sensor works when the current conductor passes through a magnetically permeable core that concentrates the conductor’s magnetic field. The Hall effect device, which is mounted within the core, is at a right angle to the concentrated magnetic field and a constant current (in one plane) excites the Hall device.
How does a Hall effect sensor measure DC current?
A Hall effect sensor is applied  to address such problems in high current measurement. This sensor work based on Ampere’s law, where magnetic field will be generated around a current carrying conductor wire. This magnetic field will be detected and converted into voltage by hall sensor.

Are Hall effect sensors AC or DC?
Hall Effect devices are made for DC, not AC as such. Devices manufactured for single polarity produce a center voltage of 2.5 volts (assuming a 5-volt unit) with no magnetic field. Using an AC magnetic field simply produces about a 4-volt peak-to-peak sine wave (at maximum current) centered at 2.5 volts.

Some types of BLDC controllers use the motor’s intrinsic Back EMF leaving the hall-effect sensors unused.

DC current is determined by measuring voltage drop across a shunt resistors then converted to analog voltage output by the Texas Instruments INA-169. Voltage sense is accomplished by scaling to 3.3V ADC range by a precision resistor divider. The current limit coincides with maximum power rating of the shunt resistors.
What type of sensors are used in brushless DC motors?
Bipolar Hall-effect sensors are used in BLDC motors to detect the position of the rotating magnet. In this example, an eight-pole motor with a three-phase winding uses three bipolar latching Hall-effect sensors. A magnetic field is required to activate a Hall-effect sensor.
